Emmy Award Winners of 2024

1. Introduction to the Emmy Awards

The 2024 Emmy Awards took place last night and, as always, were filled with excitement, laughs, and loads of fashion. But the most exciting part of the Emmy Awards, for many, is the winners of the Emmys. The best of the best win the prized awards for all of their hard work in acting, producing, directing, and more. While winning the specialty awards is always important, the main awards that seem to be the most popular are the awards for Best Drama, Best Comedy, Best Actor, and Best Actress. So let’s take some time to analyze the major winners of the Emmy Awards that took place last night. First, let’s talk a bit about the Emmy Awards. The Emmy Awards are one of the most prestigious awards in television for these various fields. The average Emmys attract over 10 million viewers, and 2 million people tune in to watch the star-studded red carpet. The viewers are drawn to vote for the winners of the biggest categories. Overall, the people who take home the statuette are more than deserving of their title, but in recent years, the public eye has started to notice some snubs on the part of the Emmys. Whether the public deems certain wins to be undeserving or certain losses to be unfair, scandals erupt every year before, during, or after the Emmys are over, and they draw attention to an important factor in the growth of the entertainment business.

2. Significance and History of the Emmy Awards

The Emmy Awards function as a testament and a witness to the tireless work of television media professionals, actors, and creators. It is an annual event that honors the excellence of television in the United States of America. Whether it is the coverage of world events that are transforming the horizon of our society or the fictional stories that entertain and interpret lives in different ways, the awards reflect the acknowledgment of such works. The underlying significance of an Emmy is that it is not the public that votes, but the peers who understand the intensity or diligence behind the scenes. Organized by three organizations, these awards recognize the artistic and technical aspects of television through administration or governance.

Since the beginning of the Emmy Awards in 1949, it has undergone an evolutionary phase and grown strong by the minute. These evolutionary phases resulted in the increase of award categories and the entries of the medium of television. An Emmy is awarded in various categories that mostly focus on various genres, such as news, acting, non-fictional works, lead roles, documentary films, sound editing, animation programs, costumes and designs, and artistic and technical proficiency. After six years of introducing the first Emmy award, a new version of the award called the Daytime Emmy Award was introduced to honor the afternoon shows, animation series, and children’s programs. Similarly, International Emmy Awards are awarded to people outside the United States as an international counterpart. In 1979, primetime Emmy awards were introduced to honor the excellence of American television. On the eve of the awards’ diamond jubilee, the same was presented.

3. 2024 Emmy Awards: Key Highlights

The 2024 Emmy Awards was just as colorful, joyous, and celebrated as it was in the past. In the spirit of recognition and appreciation of the various forms of the arts, the event was an extravagant showcase of the talented individuals who have brought entertainment to many of us. With that, let us delve deeper into the Emmy Awards of 2024 and cast a light on the talented individuals who were recognized for their hard work this year. The audience’s attention was captured by the amazing show that was put on by the entertainers, rightfully earning the biggest round of applause. There may not have been any official hosts; the lack of them was not sorely felt. With such a star-studded lineup of top-notch artists and entertainers, the excitement and anticipation kept the attendees, and of course everyone tuned in from home, busy enough. The event was especially noted for its ever-interesting acceptance speeches. Each one left an engaging keynote that some of us may heed as we trundle along in our daily lives.

3.1. Main Categories and Nominees

It is no secret to anyone that awards cover virtually all industries today. From sports to food service providers, companies and individuals seem to take satisfaction in the fact that they are the best in what they do. The objective of this analysis is to provide an exploratory analysis of the 76th Emmy Awards. The analysis will be descriptive, considering a wide range of variables concerning the winners.

The 76th Emmy Awards took place in 2024 in Los Angeles. The Emmy Awards recognize excellence in the television industry and are the equivalent of the Oscar for the film industry, the Tony for the theater industry, and the Grammy for the music industry. The prize was divided into several genres and several categories over the years, those that form the main characteristics considered in this analysis. The oldest and most famous of Emmys is the Primetime Emmy Awards. The purpose of this analysis is to analyze the Primetime Emmy Awards event in 2024, which was the 76th edition of the prize. The main categories and nominees are presented below.

3.2. Special Awards and Honors

For services of great value to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the profession, and the public, the Syd Cassyd Founders Award is presented in the areas of education and cinematography. For outstanding work in the field of dance on television, the Governors Award is given to an individual, company, organization, or project. The Engineering Plaque is given for significant achievements in engineering, while the Engineering Emmy is awarded to an individual, company, or organization that has made outstanding contributions to engineering development. Accolades for technological or engineering achievements and developments in conjunction with television that are either exceptional and universal in nature, or that are, in the course of time, improvement-inducing, significantly affect the television industry and are the Engineering Emmy awards. Outstanding contributions for engineering in conjunction with television that are exceptional and effects that are either universal or improvement-inducing, permeated or are clearly evident in the television industry are the Engineering Emmy Ceremonies, which are held every year before the annual Primetime Emmy Awards and are organized not by the Academy, but by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

3.3. Notable Trends and Themes

We observed several notable trends across these categories and more than winners. While this data set is far from representative of all final contestants and nominations across such a large number of categories, a few patterns are worth highlighting. Ultimately, we believe that the patterns and trends we selected could be meaningful as they could signal some transformations or shifts taking place in the television and film industries. They may at the very least provide interesting insights into the selection criteria used in some of these categories, some of which have been around for a long time but may be increasingly outdated in today’s media and industry landscape.

The top themes and trends we observed across the winners are: 1. Feminism 2. Diversity and Celebrating Ethnicity 3. Single and Wealthy Women 4. Substance Use and Addiction 5. Mental Health 6. Living in Suburbia and Returning to the Family 7. Musical Numbers 8. Creativity and Kids 9. Army, Military and War. For example, across these categories, there were male winners and female winners of an Emmy Award. This imbalance is already notable, yet the distribution was even more interesting when looking at the type of categories and the nature of the awards.

4. Analysis of Winners by Genre

At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, there were twenty-six categories up for competitive awards. Of these twenty-six categories, we have seven categories devoted to what is generally called the “best” program. By “best,” what I am referring to are the best programs by genre, or the ones that are considered the best in teaching us something about a certain genre that is meaningful or related to us at this time of year. It is always interesting to see what new meaning is being hoped to be brought out in the shows that are being shown and awarded in terms of how they have put together the types of stories that they have. As well, it is interesting to see how much of the heritage of the genre is still being validated as being meaningful and important. So this week we will look at the categories of: Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Television Movie, Outstanding Variety Talk Series, Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, and the short-lived kids’ category of Outstanding Young Adult Programs.

4.1. Drama Series

Hannibal is the only horror-based series to have ever won the Emmy for Best Drama Series. Whether the shining moments created by the actors and the staff of this story will be forgotten in the future will be as disturbing as the series itself. Better Call Saul, which shows the pre-story of the Saul Goodman character, first caught the eye with its high-quality production technique. After a while, its story and superb performances ensured it stayed there. Despite everything, Better Call Saul is the series with the highest prime-time view in the narrowest sense shown among the best series candidates that year. It is also the only series to win the Best Drama Series Emmy. L.A. Law may have laid the groundwork for some legal dramas that made history with some clichés and similar screen designs. However, the series was still an innovative masterpiece in the 1980s when it was broadcast. It was always innovative, following the lives of lawyers inside and outside the courthouse, and it is no accident that it received four Best Drama Series nominations. However, it was only able to turn it into a win in 1987, when the other classic was no longer broadcasting, and the final years favored L.A. Law.

4.2. Comedy Series

The outstanding choice in this category makes me very happy. This show has already been great for the last five years, but with the pandemic, the creative team found a way to make it even better. They added new characters that brought lots of laughs and fit beautifully in the universe. Here’s to another season in the making. This year, it is not my favorite comedy series, but it is a top-notch show. The cast continues to display amazing chemistry, giving some actors and actresses recognition once and for all. Women’s perspectives, funny conversations, the loveliest friendships, and heartfelt emotions made this show a staple for American comedy series lovers. The writing is top-notch, mixing funny situations with deep moments of our protagonists. These fine actors and actresses deserve all the awards they want to give. There is a lot of good-hearted laughter, and as someone who values sincerity and friendship over anything, this show has a special place in my heart. Although the awards are not representative of every excellent team in comedy, the structure of a television show needs plenty of elements and caring individuals to really shine. I hope more people realize that comedy doesn’t need randomness to be funny. Then we will see an even more diverse group of funny television shows that represent the variety of jokes, not the variety through people.

4.3. Limited Series or TV Movie

Netflix proved “Latest Craze” wasn’t a fluke as its successors, “Speed of Lies” and “Taylor,” also notched their well-deserved nominations. The television movie “Latest Craze,” which may as well be a full-length motion picture, is a 15-minute-long feel-good TV movie that takes place in a coastal town and centers around a girl who found a treasure in the sea during her regular swim. When in contact with the media, she cleverly convinces all correspondent photographers and the press that the treasure must belong to the sea and that no artifact from the sea should remain on board any vessel. The kind gesture will unexpectedly propel the town to be the latest top tourist destination, even surpassing Disneyland’s attendance. With its outstanding production value, which would surpass the vast majority of Hallmark and other similar TV movies produced over the years, “Latest Craze” is at the forefront of the new tide of production of TV feature films.

Redemption is at the heart of the story of another exceptional Netflix production, “Speed of Lies,” which is part of a Netflix anthology. Directed by a dearly loved filmmaker and actress who lent her talent to several notable projects, “Speed of Lies” is written by an Iranian-born British writer who has consistently delivered the goods, as the setting and research on several of his series still score a perfect 100%. “Speed of Lies” is indeed a five-star TV movie. Described by the President of the Jury as “another display of top form by the director,” the suspenseful TV movie is a family and first love story centered around a missing photo showing a grandmother, while a swimming pool incident hints that the husband’s alibi, supported by a manipulated hotel staff and paid witnesses, is a lie. The best alibi and every good lie have a tiny bit of truth.

4.4. Variety Talk Series

In the Variety category this year, “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” won over the citizens of the United States, who voted for it in the online polls. Also nominated were “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “Late Late Show with James Corden,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” and “A Little Late with Lilly Singh.” New host, multiculturalism advocate, and stand-up comedian Trevor Noah proved that he was the perfect leader for his crew during his global tours. The viewers in this variety category were entertained by politics, pop culture, and American hypocrisy; it was supposed to be 108 comedies. He would truthfully pursue answers to hard questions in life and present them in a humorous fashion with great timing and puns. This work demanded constant improvisation, for which Noah was well known among the millennial public. The Daily Show was able to broadcast valuable information through jokes, which was not an easy thing to achieve. All those working for the show deserve praise, especially the host, who did a wonderful job in his very first act.

4.5. Reality Competition Program

The Amazing Race has now won 10 of the last 11 Emmys in this category, with the only non-AR win being a three-year streak of wins by The Voice. This is the eighth time that the show has been eligible in this category, and they had a previous Season 10 loss in addition to wins during Seasons 7-9, 13-15, and 17. This season, the show aired Season 36 and received five nominations: Reality-Competition Program, Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction Program, Sound Editing for a Nonfiction Program, Picture Editing for a Nonfiction Program, and Picture Editing for Variety Programming.

The Voice, meanwhile, becomes the first show to win the first time that they are eligible since The Amazing Race took this award all the way back in 2003, and it is their fourth win in a row in the category. In 2024, Season 34 aired, and it also received a nomination for Production Design for a Variety Special.

5. Diversity and Representation in the 2024 Emmy Awards

In one way, diversity did increase at the 2024 Emmy Awards. For the first time ever, there were no men nominated, the first time this has even happened at the primetime Emmys. While some heralded this as a breakthrough moment for the awards, it also demonstrates the ongoing oppression of women in television, particularly older women who are almost completely absent from working within the industry and thus receiving these accolades. Expanding diversity occurs throughout the industry, burdened by immense limitations, from writers’ rooms to what actually gets greenlit by decision-makers impacting our media sector. It is convenient, simple, and misleading to claim that the greatest determinant of increasing diversity in terms of gender parity or increasing diverse stories being told is nominations adjudicated and voted on by a single stage of voters, as opposed to the numerous stages of voters prior to nominations and then voters in the competitive categories. Women, particularly women of color, have made the primetime Emmys a staple of coverage and discussion by delivering outstanding performances, and at least have had two women hosting them. And what we are really addressing here goes far beyond simply increased representation during the actual show; this is part of a constant drumbeat reporting of the industry and these specific awards.

5.1. Gender Diversity

Currently, race, ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity, when considered utilizing inclusive global media content, represents the most exciting part of the study. Gender diversity, the topic of exploration here, has been explored somewhat more in both the research and practitioner literature. The first examination of this using data from the 1980–1991 period showed consistent as well as persistent underrepresentation of women. Practitioner-oriented sources consistently support this finding. Pooling data from 1983–2000 demonstrated the relatively stable pattern of women to men recognition. The last published study using data from the 2000–2010 time frame examined gender on the creative side of television production rather than focusing on performance aspects. Descriptive results found that females represented a minimal proportion of writers, directors, and producers in the television production arena and further showed that the odds of winning were generally lower for females than for males.

Many of the issues related to the prior qualitative as well as the related quantitative reports parallel the positions articulated within the sibling diversity context. These reports have emphasized that this aspect of diversity is often limited within the production pipeline. Limits occur due to stereotypical attributes. Related roles for women have been identified in the movie-based context by academia. Summaries, discussion of open data challenges, and a set of related hypotheses are developed for future study. Managerial implications pertaining to the television program development, production, and selection process of increasing gender diversity are given as a conclusion.

5.2. Racial and Ethnic Diversity

Although the 2024 Emmy Award nominations and winners had been touted in the months and weeks before the ceremony for their racial and ethnic diversity, and concerns had been raised in the previous assessment of a predominantly straight male list of winners, the discussions around the diversity of the Emmys 2024 are very different. While it seems that sitting TV viewers have had sufficient representation in every category, it can be explicitly singled out that there are significant gaps and vacant spaces in the way the digital production is being made. The same content hosting app offers completely different experiences for men and women, and for LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color. Where the typical white straight male’s journeys and life stories are still saturated with every color, the stories of underrepresented minorities remain patchy and fleeting. When it turns its eyes to the digital companion and vice versa, the viewer sees, with amazement, that the minority stories present are not connected only by the fact that they are genuine and overlooked, but also because they deal with the same themes; particularly, with the social issue of drug addiction.

These plots are, then, the minority series winners of the 2024 Emmys with ‘The Silent Spouses of TV Drama’ and ‘Partygoers.’ If those digital non-best comedy series are not awarded, the industry responsible for sustaining the media may not assure individuals who are not straight or non-white that they can entrust the media with the responsibility to entertain us all with their own stories and experiences, distinct from their current reality, but totally constant, legitimate, revealing, validating, and intriguing. When the digital output only focuses on several minority stories, concentrating their attention on their issues and personal dilemmas, and giving just a glimpse of the joy, colors, and celebrations that they also produce and experience, digital television ceases to be a cultural platform directed at the general public. Reflecting the experience of a narrow audience, you can hear the rituals of ‘Underrepresented Minorities,’ a participant who is excluded from the party, and especially a timid follower who supports the invisibility of everyone.

5.3. LGBTQ+ Representation

The LGBTQ+ genre has been growing increasingly over the years. Transphobic and homophobic laws are being pushed in different countries, and yearly global pride parades are being conducted. This genre offers more drama, often involving people having to hide certain aspects of themselves, and the overarching message of coming out to the world does attract viewers all around the world. Representation has been a problem for years in movies and TV shows, and the positive change has been palpable. Though the genre of LGBTQ+ has increased, not all of it is positive, as members of the community often get catfished by some filmmakers through problematic movies and TV shows. Such genres, regardless of representation, should not be viewed by the community due to their depiction of harmful stereotypes, problematic content, and misconceptualization of certain characters.

Regardless of its few toxic problems, it is important to note that the representation of the genre has made strides, and it can now be a serious contender in terms of winning awards. Furthermore, the LGBTQ+ community in general is able to produce these movies and shows themselves, where the lead characters were an actual couple in real life as well. With the increase of representation for LGBTQ+, it is hoped that the toxic community will be reduced to a minimum. Finally, a question that can be asked over the asymmetric attention given is whether there is more to the LGBTQ+ TV genre that is worth investing in. After some investigation into the context, it does interest me. At first glance, there is more drama attached, which often leads to deep emotional connections. These TV shows are greatly successful in the drama aspect, leading to are-they-actually-dating tweets and all firsts in the relationship type moments, which is relatable, escalating the popularity of the shows. Also, such TV shows do greater good in terms of moral and social aspects, which will be further explained in the discussion.

6. Impact of Streaming Platforms on the Emmy Awards

As the streaming platforms increased their impact this year, many new shows from this medium received nominations in several categories. With the use of multiple streaming platforms, the audience’s demands are fulfilled by the production of a big diversity of content created according to their expectations. In addition, the multiple platforms and the easy search and assistance tools make it easier to find content even from other countries. Streaming platforms have become global with a global reach and varied delivery mechanisms. By increasing the demand for these business models and increasing the number of existing programs, the quality of the content has also increased, offering excellent programs with recognized cast, script, and outstanding production.

These awards increased the visibility of streaming platforms, allowing for greater visibility of the creators, the production work, and the target public, increasing the number of subscribers to these platforms that will produce more original content in the following years. Many charts and corporations did not recognize the quality of these streaming platforms since they did not receive important awards and recognitions from respected guilds and associations. With these shows being nominated and awarded, the value of the companies and shareholding turnover has increased. Users typically subscribe to the best content, which motivates the company’s growth as new subscribers will come to watch the award-winning shows, which will be the best shows available for the target audience.

6.1. Netflix

Netflix had, until 2018, impressed with its exclusives and had bagged a good number of award wins. Yesterday was no different. Netflix was able to win 32 awards. 24 of them were creative arts awards and 8 of them were telecast awards. It won awards for series like Ozark, The Queen’s Gambit, and The Crown. It impressed at all levels. Multiple actors and actresses from its series won, and its directors and creative teams won awards as well. HBO used to be a strong force in prior years, and Netflix had stepped up rapidly in the last few years. In 2021, it seemed like Netflix was caught off guard, but it fought back in 2022 and won many awards. It maintained the momentum and was on fire again at the Emmy Awards this time. Next year seems unpredictable as well, considering the immense competition.

Netflix, just like Amazon Prime Video, is a go-to platform for incredible original content. It, too, maintains multiple highly watched films in its portfolio. Its original series like Money Heist are hot. It is able to produce thrilling series that are a success almost every time. It impressed at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and will surely impress at the Emmy Awards should they not bring their well-reputed content. It tends to take home a number of awards close to big boy HBO. Some of their series that have had a real impression on society, such as Sex Education, The Witcher, Stranger Things, and more, have been favored for their brilliance.

6.2. HBO Max

The conversion of AT&T’s WarnerMedia into standalone Warner Bros. Discovery and the spin-off of the media conglomerate’s streaming offering HBO Max is still bringing fascinating news. The price hike implemented in 2021, together with four different packages to choose from instead of the one package available up until then – Ad-free at US $14.99, with advertising for US $9.99, an Ad Supported Plan exclusive for live sports for US $9.99, or an ad-supported HBO cord-cutter version for $9.99 – had an outsized impact as the OTT firm’s revenues increased by 8.89 percent relative to the previous year and its global numbers reached 72.8 million. Moreover, HBO and HBO Max premiered three of the top ten streamers’ original movies in the U.S., together with the news that the method used to calculate exactly how many subscribers actually watch the original content of streaming services has already been in place for more than a year, given that it is HBO and HBO Max’s original movies that we are talking about.

6.3. Disney+

Disney+ owned the Emmy Awards ceremony. The streaming service managed to gather a total of 38 nominations, being the streaming service with the most nominations during the night. Disney+ succeeded in getting 13 prizes in total: 9 at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards and 4 at the Primetime Emmy Awards. Some of these prizes include Outstanding Factual Series for “Secrets of the Whales” and Outstanding Narrator for “A Real Bug’s Life.” However, most of these wins were achieved in two of their most popular shows: “The Mandalorian” and its spin-off “The Book of Boba Fett.” Both series managed to conquer seven of the selections the channel was nominated for. “The Book of Boba Fett” was as popular as its precursor on the Emmy Awards leaderboard. “The Mandalorian” received selections for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance, Outstanding Music Composition, Special Visual Effects, Outstanding Sound Editing, and Prosthetic Makeup.

One of the reasons why Disney+ made these significant achievements was due to its marketing and public relations team. They have shown initiative in their work behind some of the advertising and press event strategies. Their approach has managed to determine the marketing budget and has been very considerate of fan events. Besides, it is impossible not to attribute a part of these prizes to a Disney fanbase that is going over the top for the Star Wars series and encouraging the rest of the nominations to recognize other endeavors. In this way, Disney+ TV shows have become popular enough to gather nominations in the eyes of Emmy Award voters. It cannot be forgotten that Disney+ carries out a large promotional effort to get Disney+ fans to vote for those entries when it comes to securing nominations for TV series and not just feature films that are normally relevant to the Oscars.

6.4. Apple TV+

It is clear that for the three companies achieving the most awards, the Internet is the medium connecting them. It makes most sense to look at the three companies together rather than compare one company to another, as the achievements are strongly interrelated. We already know how Apple excels in television: besides the successful television service, they have collaborated in series with luminaries, and the popular figure, or the interesting partnership with an esteemed workshop. They also invested in nostalgia, such as rebooting a classic series, among others.

There is also a nice mix of genres: horror series, comedy, drama, a comedy mystery in the form of a revisionist twist, or the adaptation of a classic novel. As an overall assessment, Apple has managed to serve different tastes and has always met a certain qualitative level. All awarded series are from Apple, and we have not yet mentioned a popular series about a flock of video game designers that always delivers the expected laughs rather gracefully. Are we all foregoing those t-shirts because we are well aware that we are now always looking through a glass – small and cold – and darkly?

7. Innovations and Technological Advancements in Television Production

The principal advancements in television production were developments from the existing technology, which is a transformative development of HDR. Production crews guided the innovation, and networks demonstrated preferences that shaped technology. Both production and the function of the TV set itself pointed to an increased number of pixels as necessary to take advantage of improvements in other aspects of image quality. Machine learning began to have a significant effect on the types of automation available to production departments, both on the set and in post. These are longer-term developments that have applications both for TV signals and for the transmission of videos in general. AI enabled the potential creation of a fish tank filled with spontaneously generated spokespersons, able to deal with continually changing information, thereby suggesting strategic options for the future.

Viable implementations will require significant capital investment and the attention of many different elements of the industry, although success will also depend on vital connections to journalism and for TV-based educational options. Television, as a large global industry that still provides substantial service to very large audiences, was slow to change, especially as the competition for attention became more global and also more intense. However, TV continued to have distinct advantages in storytelling based on human qualities that are hard to automate, if the transition to higher technical levels is both affordable and allowable under international custom. As a source of high-information content, television can also be a good communicator of highly useful knowledge, including that created outside of the television industry itself.

7.1. Virtual Production

Virtual Production. Virtual production employs virtual reality to allow creators to create and observe their work at the same time, simplifying the capturing of 3D or 2D content in a visually rich environment, thanks to computer-generated imagery. Various works represent the genre of works that implement virtual production to create the world within the context of a compelling narrative. Motion capture and real-time image capture are the heavy lifters in this space. Within the discipline of image capture, the familiar growing family of LED walls provides the accurate and detailed backdrop to live-action performance, embedded effects, and computer graphics, all powered by custom software that addresses the needs of the production.

These creations are not so much about workflow enhancement, but are themselves complex, revolutionary software projects. Performance capture refers to the digital recording of human movement. Our definition of a virtual production pipeline might be the complex set of tools and processes required to make that happen. Physically distant teams and even institutions must coordinate with one another on a very detailed level to ensure that the regions of interest and the interactions between VFX and other live action can be executed efficiently. As they loop in visual effects supervisors, the graphic designers designing for these screens, and other creative players, the sheer number of people collaboratively working towards a common goal.

The results of any performance do require a certain kind of uniform technical literacy shared by the cast with the VFX team and LED wall technology. In civil society, we connect with one another effectively by developing literacy in different forms. In one hour or thirty minutes, the session goes into a lot of detail documenting the roles and responsibilities of the virtual production pipeline, each of which could also be included as technical prompt questions in individual interviews with the VFX supervisor or members of the virtual production team.

7.2. AI and Machine Learning

In 2024, many universities were implementing courses in artificial intelligence and machine learning, despite the decline around the middle of the 2010s. Many of the problems of that period originated from a poor understanding of how to develop models that avoided learning from the corrupted patterns that defective data propagated. In the context of creating television series, movies, and performing arts, AI and machine learning have become increasingly popular and potent. The development of virtual actors is benefiting considerably from AI models trained in the early decades of the 21st century. These models could transform files of classic and contemporary novels into data representations of the conversations, scenarios, and plots. These data propagations, once linked to a human emotional response typical of the given character, allowed the construction of virtual actors and scenarios of a very high level of realism.

A Hough transformation and recursive-restricted associative convolutive neural networks were used in all models. Then an autoencoder was utilized for sonic denoising, and a model was trained in vaults of recorded sound from broadcast television news programs of the first half of the 21st century and their transcripts. All AI and machine learning models were trained on computers running on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards. Models were used for the virtual actors. The scenario creator was developed using a toolkit. The conversational model was trained on over 13,000 books. The final viewer emotion model was trained based on eleven hundred universes of text data and viewer emotions. The final virtual actor has a realism that becomes indistinguishable from human conversations in 92.24% of its interactions. The scripts created a virtual actor with a maximum peak emotion score above 95.27 during 30.17% of its conversations.

7.3. Immersive Technologies

The televoting system was designed to be as user-friendly as possible, given the target demographic spread, with over 90% of the voters only needing a smartphone. Despite multiple attempts, we could not reach a 100% engagement rate for voters. Those who were unable to vote used conventional text messages to submit vote requests. After the voting deadline passed, we discarded the conventional televoting messages and counted only those votes submitted via smartphones. The televoting application was a collaborative effort between the public broadcaster and an independent group of students who had beneficial experience in designing similar applications. For 4% of the televoters, the platform failed to submit their votes, and 4% of the voters unpredictably submitted wrong preferences. The platform could handle the incoming televotes fast enough and was also capable of accepting the messages in large quantities. The lessons learned were used to deliver a better televoting system for the next edition.

Six years after the first experiments with immersive technologies during the international broadcast of the Eurovision Song Contest, it was time to increase the user experience even further, following consumer expectations created by the increasing quality of today’s deep immersive experiences in the living room. Throughout a collaboration between the EBU and the Dutch broadcaster, the first large live event was produced in an uncompressed light field and could be delivered to households and live audiences through both the latest home televisions, light field displays, and virtual reality goggles. The production and delivery formats were specifically designed to cater to different levels of user experience, from the specialized immersive home setups to the more generally available unified secondary pieces of LF, lowlights of LF, and multiview full HD back. A wide range of functionalities was studied, from multi-view to light field navigation, and levels of details of degrees of freedom were introduced.

8. International Presence at the 2024 Emmy Awards

The International awards were also an assortment of stars from across the entertainment industry. The most significant breakout of the Middle East was Turkey’s spying bodyguard drama, which had aired its first American season in time for this year’s competition. Racking up many of the awards, the show’s one-to-watch status had already been established earlier in the year. The showing at the Emmys just reiterates the storytelling and acting craft that is coming out of Turkey. One thing about whetting the appetite of audiences yearning for Pakistan’s emblematic brand of Urdu comedy with a teashaken slap-a-knee, often violent, wit par excellence was Gussail’s record-smashing streaming ratings. Its pocket dynamo star, the unstoppable Sonya Hussain’s nomination nod sparked an international hoo-ha and then some. The wave she walked down to the stage to receive her award for Best Actress in a Drama series didn’t come near to describing the pandemonium among fans. The lack of social media activity for 52 whole seconds while a first cousin, a virgin unicorn, and printer’s devils in every village were hit with incoming phone calls crying out Sonya’s win, appeared to have verified that she wasn’t available. When none of the said big cheeses picked up, every voicemail was revealed, and the acclaim just went into overdrive. We will never hear the phrase, “I’ll get back to you after the show,” in the same unjaded earsplitting dip-throttle bulldozer impact again.

A significant spillover of international schmoozing must have taken place choreographically between Sonya and co-presenter, Turkey’s veteran heartthrob, earlier in the green rooms. Although a first for a Turkish actor to be on the invitation list for presenting, this isn’t his first red carpet, or indeed his first Award Season cavorting. In 2022, scant meters outside… hair-snatchingly real. Other International category awards of particular note included the poignant, a standout tragicomedy from Tunisia, where the evening’s profound diversity celebration momentum picked up yet more warmth for a recognition of yet another Pakistan original in an at once both traumatic yet delineating comedy sketch series. The series’ backdrop is to the message of a Middle Eastern bomb crater of a newbie media start-up, with larger, dangerous neighboring fish with nothing nicer in mind than to eat it swimming the waters. And people hunting for various understandable reasons that go in a direct line to, or come out of the throes of classified trauma that come clearly from the community’s extraordinary talent, integrity, and pride. 2024 was a charged edition for the awards, where the whole world flared into incandescent focus, and we all felt something very different and very special.

8.1. International Series and Performances

It is well known that foreign cinema and international series have suffered prejudice from most American award-giving organizations. Indeed, it is only recently that awards have begun to recognize their international counterparts, while others remain lacking in this department. However, this prejudice seemed to have ended with the arrival of the streaming era, and in 2024, the explosion of foreign cinema reached new heights.

A vast quantity of series emerged from the international platforms that had been the competition from the beginning, such as American and British shows on content networks. In the end, after a lot of criticism from organizations that have always wished to exert significant influence, the number of nominations, wins, and the audience reception of the international series made it impossible for any empirically minded person to say the raw data is due to any factors other than the quality, the popularity, and the audience’s interest in foreign cinema.

8.2. Global Audience Engagement

As entertainment productions like streaming, scripted, or unscripted series and other television-derivative formats like live shows or animation continue to broaden the concept of a “television show,” we further push the concept of Emmy-awarded content with the establishment of new categories. In an era where shows are more than just visual and auditory experiences, but also cross-platform experiences, heavy efforts invested in marketing campaigns and producing live events, the Academy embraces reality and unscripted content through traditional and technology-enhanced storytelling techniques. In 2024, the Television Academy innovated on the existing award categories and introduced show-level awards such as Best Promo Campaign for a Series Short Form or Best Stunt/Special Team Coordination in Reality or Unscripted Show. These additions especially call the attention of creators and bring the attention of viewers to the fact that technicians and artists dedicated to the virtual world are joining those from the physical world for a deep understanding of emerging responsibilities in producing content that respects a variety of values, norms, and cultural differences. The range of the content and hard work to produce and promote opens up some doors for viewers to watch new shows with different artistic expressions, content, and formats. Moreover, recognizing a more diverse program and creative talent landscape also contributes to better broadcasting and distribution in local and global contexts, aligning with the overarching goal of the Academy: celebrating, honoring, and educating people about the genres and formats of television they award.
